Rapper facing murder charge freed from jail

Atlanta rap artist Radric "Gucci Mane" Davis, charged with murder in a May 10 shooting, got out of jail on a $100,000 bond Tuesday the same day his debut CD was released.

Davis, 25, walked out of the DeKalb County Jail accompanied by his attorney, Dennis Scheib. Inmates placed a sign in a window at the jail that had two heart shapes framing the word "Gucci."

Radric 'Gucci Mane' Davis walks out of the DeKalb County Jail on Tuesday. Davis is charged with killing Henry Lee Clark III, a Macon rapper.

Davis is charged with killing Henry Lee Clark III, a Macon rapper known as "Pookie Loc." Davis' attorney said he acted in self-defense when Clark and four other men attacked him. Chief Assistant District Attorney John Petrey acknowledged that granting bond in a murder case was unusual, but he said it was justified by the facts of the case.

A bond hearing was set for 9 a.m. Tuesday, but Davis never appeared in court. Instead, his attorney negotiated a deal with prosecutors and police behind closed doors.

The family of the victim opposed the agreement, fearing Davis might be a flight risk, according to the prosecutor.

But Petrey said there were enough questions about Clark's actions the night of the shooting to justify releasing Davis from the jail, where he has been housed since late Thursday.

Clark had a history of criminal charges in Macon that included carrying a concealed weapon, cocaine possession, participating in a criminal gang and aggravated assault, according to Capt. David Davis, a Bibb County jail spokesman.

Clark was a member of the Macon-based recording group Loccish Lifestyle.

Scheib, Radric Davis' attorney, said his client was visiting a woman on Springside Run in Decatur when five men stormed into the house with guns and duct tape. The men fled after Davis fired at them, the attorney said. Clark's body was found three days later near Columbia Middle School.

Scheib said the shooting grew out of an ongoing dispute. He said "some people" wanted control of Davis' music and that when he wouldn't cooperate, "they put a contract out on him." He declined to identify the individuals.

Davis, whose father was called "Goochie Man," has been involved in a rivalry with another rapper, Jay "Young Jeezy" Jenkins.

The two recorded a single last year called "Icy," slang for wearing a lot of diamonds. After "Icy" was released, a disagreement developed over rights to the song, according to Jacob York, owner of Davis' label, Big Cat Records.

Both artists then put singles on the Internet attacking each other. Jenkins offers a bounty for Davis' necklace in the song "Stay Strapped," street lingo that means "carry a gun." Davis taunts Jenkins in the song "Round One."

From his jail cell, Davis wrote a poem called "Round Two," in which he asks fans to "pray tonight for Gucci Mane and even pray for Jeezy."

Jenkins was not involved in the shooting, said his lawyer, Janice Singer.

"It is offensive and outrageous that Jeezy's name is being used by Gucci Mane's defense team and his CD producer as a strategy to sell CDs and defend against the charges leveled against Gucci Mane," Singer said.

Big Cat Records announced Monday it was offering a $10,000 reward to anyone with details about the shooting.

Scheib said several people have come forward.

Davis' publicist, Trea Davenport, said Davis would not celebrate the Tuesday release of his debut CD, "Trap House," but instead was "just going to enjoy his family and be in prayer."
